Merlin Bird Identification App - Free Software from Cornell Lab of Ornithology

The Cornell University Lab of Ornithology released a new app to help north american birders identify birds based on size, shape, colour and habitat as well as referencing Ebird Statistical data in the area that the user is using the app to help the birder identify the bird he/she is looking at. Images, range maps and bird call audio are then offered to the user. The splashscreen for the app indicates that it features 285 north american bird species. This is a pretty exciting software offering considering it is free, and this might be a tool that will help thousands (millions?) of people to get into bird watching. At present, the App is only available at the Apple App Store, but according to the website, an Android version will be released in the spring of 2014.
